At Spicers Retreats, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to announce that four of our retreats have earned the Sustainable Tourism Certification from Ecotourism Australia, a significant milestone in our commitment to protecting the environment and promoting responsible tourism.
Four retreats, one shared commitment
Our four Southeast Queensland retreats have received this prestigious certification, including Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Spicers Clovelly Estate, Spicers Peak Lodge and Spicers Hidden Vale. Each of these retreats has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental, socio-economic, cultural, and responsible management principles by implementing global best-practice sustainable tourism standards to achieve this recognition.
“This recognition is a testament to our commitment to responsible tourism and the hard work of our dedicated teams. By protecting and honouring our natural surroundings, we’re able to create experiences that not only inspire our guests but also safeguard these precious environments for generations to come,” says CEO Tash Tobias.
Our journey doesn’t end here – it only strengthens our resolve to lead with integrity and sustainability in everything we do.”
How we are leading the way in sustainability
We have integrated numerous sustainability initiatives throughout our properties, including partnering with community and conservation organisations, repurposing food waste, sourcing local produce, and providing accessible rooms for guests.
For our outstanding commitment, we were praised by Ecotourism Australia CEO Elissa Keenan, “Travellers are increasingly demanding more environmentally friendly stays that give back to local communities, and Spicers Retreats absolutely reflect this philosophy in everything they do.
We congratulate Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Spicers Clovelly Estate, Spicers Peak Lodge, and Spicers Hidden Vale for achieving Sustainable Tourism Certification, joining over 100 Ecotourism Australia-certified hotels and resorts across Australia that meet global best-practice standards.
It is wonderful to see the accommodation sector lead the way in integrating sustainability across a wide range of environmental and social impact initiatives. For example, Spicers Peak Lodge partners with Vanguard Laundry, a socially responsible linen supplier, and features Leif bathroom amenities, which are eco-friendly, plant-based, and made in Australia. Leif’s products highlight native Australian botanicals, are vegan and cruelty-free, and are free from sulphates and parabens, aligning with sustainable and ethical practices.”
The rigorous path and looking ahead
Achieving this certification is no small feat. The process involves meeting over 200 key criteria across four pillars of sustainability, including environmental, social, cultural, and business practices. The certification process can take up to twelve months and includes an independent third-party audit. Once certified, properties must undergo periodic audits to maintain their certification, ensuring ongoing commitment to global best-practice standards.
As we celebrate this significant achievement, our dedication to sustainability continues to guide us in providing exceptional, eco-conscious experiences for our guests. At Spicers Retreats, we are committed to offering the highest standards – not only in luxury but also in environmental responsibility. We look forward to welcoming you to our retreats to experience sustainable luxury.
